Coens, Penn Among DGA Nominees

Guild Also Recognizes Anderson, Gilroy, Schnabel

Joel and Ethan Coen, fresh off of a win for Best Director and Best Picture from the Broadcast Film Critics Association for their crime thriller "No Country for Old Men," are among the filmmakers being honored with nominations for the Director Guild of America Awards.

The DGA announced the nominations for the 60th annual event Tuesday in Los Angeles. The guild is perhaps the most accurate indicator of which director will go on to win the Best Director Academy Award. Only six of the previous 59 nominees have not gone on to win the Oscar in the category.

The Coen brothers, who are sharing the nomination for the DGA honor, will face off against Tony Gilroy for the legal thriller "Michael Clayton," Paul Thomas Anderson for the oil boom drama "There Will Be Blood," Julian Schnabel for the drama "The Dog and the Butterfly" and Sean Penn for the adventure drama "Into the Wild."

This year marks the 60th year of the Directors Guild Awards.

"We are very proud to have today's five nominees join the illustrious list of directors that have been nominated for directorial excellence in feature filmmaking over the past 59 years,” DGA president Michael Apted said in a statement. "What makes this award truly meaningful to directors is the knowledge that only this one is decided by their peers -- the men and women who know first-hand the passion, sweat and fear that goes into each production."

Joel Coen is the only director previously nominated for the award, for his work on the crime drama "Fargo."

Noticeably absent from the nominations is Tim Burton, who has won acclaim and other industry nominations for directing the bloody movie musical "Sweeney Todd." Other notable filmmakers missing the cut include Ridley Scott for "American Gangster," Jason Reitman for "Juno" and Joe Wright for "Atonement."

The awards will be handed out Jan. 26 in Los Angeles.
