Making Whoopi: Goldberg Joins 'The View'
Actress-Comedian Taking Over As Moderator On Talk Show
POSTED: Wednesday, August 1, 2007
NEW YORK -- The women of "The View" have a new colleague.
Whoopi Goldberg is joining the regular cast of the ABC daytime talk show as moderator.
Goldberg replaces the sometimes-combative co-host Rosie O'Donnell, who left the show after a little less than a year that included dust-ups with Donald Trump and co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck.
"I love this show," Goldberg said on the show after the announcement Wednesday. "I love coming on it. I love hanging out with you guys."
Show producer and co-host Barbara Walters said Monday that she'd make the announcement about the replacement at some point this week. Goldberg's name was among those being batted around in the media as O'Donnell's replacement.
Goldberg won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for playing a spiritual medium opposite Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore in the drama "Ghost." She's also won Emmy, Tony and Grammy Awards.
Also a popular stand-up comedian, Goldberg has also twice hosted the Academy Awards. In addition to Walters and Hasselbeck, Goldberg will be joining Joy Behar on the panel.
Another slot has yet to be filled on "The View," and a show spokesman said that there are "ongoing discussions" with possible candidates.
Comedian Sherri Shepherd, who has appeared on "The View" as a substitute co-host on the show several times in the past month, is among the people rumored to be in line for the job.
