LOS ANGELES -- The television movie "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" led the list of Emmy nominees with 17 bids at the Primetime Emmy Award nominations Thursday, while "The Sopranos" led the series nominations with 15.
The nominations, read by actors Jon Cryer and Kyra Sedgwick in Los Angeles, yielded some surprises. Last year's Best Drama series, "24," was not nominated, and the comedy "Desperate Housewives" missed the cut as well.
Joining "The Sopranos" in the race for the top drama Emmy are "House," "Heroes," "Boston Legal" and "Grey's Anatomy," while "Ugly Betty," "Entourage," "The Office," "30 Rock" and "Two and a Half Men" are vying for Best Comedy.
Taking on "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" for Best Made-for-TV Movie are "Inside the Twin Towers," Longford," "The Ron Clark Story," and "Why I Wore Lipstick to My Mastectomy."
"The Sopranos" scored lead acting nominations for stars James Gandolfini and Edie Falco, and supporting nods for co-stars Michael Imperioli, Aida Turturro and Lorraine Bracco.
Taking on Gandolfini in the Best Actor in a Drama category are Hugh Laurie for "House," Denis Leary for "Rescue Me," James Spader for "Boston Legal" and last year's winner, Keifer Sutherland for "24."
Facing off against Falco for Best Dramatic Actress are Patricia Arquette for "Medium," Minnie Driver for "The Riches," Sedgwick for "The Closer," Sally Field for "Brothers and Sisters" and last year's winner, Mariska Hargitay for "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit."
Vying for the top prize for comedy series actor are Alec Baldwin for "30 Rock," Steve Carell for "The Office," Ricky Gervais for "Extras," Tony Shalhoub for "Monk" and Charlie Sheen for "Two and a Half Men."
In the running for Best Comedy Actress are Felicity Huffman for "Desperate Housewives," America Ferrera for "Ugly Betty," Tina Fey for "30 Rock," Mary-Louise Parker for "Weeds" and last year's winner, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, for "The New Adventures of Old Christine."
"Grey's Anatomy" fared well in the supporting categories. Chandra Wilson, Katherine Heigl and Sandra Oh all were nominated in the Best Supporting Actress in a Drama category, where they will take on Rachel Griffiths for "Brothers and Sisters," and Turturro and Bracco for "The Sopranos."
T.R. Knight scored a Best Supporting Actor in a Drama nomination for "Grey's Anatomy," and will face off against Imperioli for "The Sopranos," Masi Oka for "Heroes," William Shatner for "Boston Legal," and Terry O'Quinn and Michael Emerson, both from "Lost."
Up for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series are Cryer for "Two and a Half Men," Neil Patrick Harris for "How I Met Your Mother" and Rainn Wilson for "The Office." "Entourage" nabbed two supporting actor nods, for Kevin Dillon and Jeremy Piven.
"Two and a Half Men" had two nominees in the Best Supporting Actress in a comedy category -- for Holland Taylor and Conchata Ferrell. Also up for the trophy are Jamie Pressly for "My Name is Earl," Jenna Fischer for "The Office," Vanessa Williams for "Ugly Betty" and Elizabeth Perkins for "Weeds."
The Creative Arts Emmys -- which go to guest performers and winners in technical categories -- will be handed out Sept. 6, while the major winners will be unveiled Sept. 16. Both ceremonies will take place at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.
