Roll Dice, Say 'I Do' On 7-7-07

Weddings, Gambling Planned Among Superstitious

POSTED: Friday, July 6, 2007
UPDATED: 2:26 pm CDT July 7, 2007

Saturday many Americans will be asking themselves one question: Do I feel lucky?

A lot of people do, for one reason. Saturday is July 7, 2007, or 7-7-07. In numerological terms, that's about as big as it gets for the superstitious.

People booked gambling junkets and casinos offered "7"-themed promotions.

In Tennessee, Christians gathered in a football stadium to pray on a day that has good Biblical implications for many.

The day also promised to be a big for weddings. Three times the normal number of couples planned to tie the knot Saturday -- including actress Eva Longoria and basketball boyfriend Tony Parker.

The Ritz Carlton Hotel's Central Park location in New York offered a July 7 wedding package. It featured a reception for 77, a seven-tier wedding cake, seven Tiffany diamonds for the bride, and a seven-night honeymoon at any Ritz in the world -- for $77,777.

Tying The Knot

Lucky is a theme for Laura Stuckwisch and Jarred Illingworth, who kept a penny they found on a dinner date, reported WRTV in Indianapolis.

"When I picked it up, it said 1977, which is the year Jarred was born," Stuckwisch said.

The couple, dubbed "Lucky Laura" and "Jackpot Jarred" by their families, said the coin is just one of many ways the number seven has significance in their lives.

"I had this ring for probably three months, and the one day I was looking at it and I was like, 'Whoa! There are seven diamonds in this ring,'" Stuckwisch said. "We didn't plan it or know it or anything."

John Sattler is presiding over the couple's 7-7-07 wedding.

"I cannot tell you how many requests we have had because of the significance of the numbers," Sattler said. "Seven is a Biblical number. It has to do with the seven days of creation. They marched around Jericho seven times."

Laura Stuckwisch and Jarred Illingworth hope to strike it rich with an everlasting marriage. They -- along with thousands of other couples -- plan to wed on July 7, 2007.

Laura and Jarred hope to strike it rich with an everlasting marriage, but they don't credit luck for their happiness.

"We didn't find each other. Someone else put us where we were and then connected us," Illingworth said. "If it was up to us, we were in the same building working for a year and a half and never ran into each other."

The couple plans to stick with the seven theme in their married lives, at least when they can.

"I don't know about seven kids, though. We might need seven jobs," Illingworth said.

Of the couples marrying on Saturday, David's Bridal in Plymouth Meeting, Pa., dressed hundreds of them.

"It added that extra aura of mystery of magic. Every couple is looking for that little something extra that kicks their marriage off to a lucky start," said Cindi Freeburn, a David's Bridal representative.

Numbers Really Lucky?

Numerologists such as Elizabeth Joyce said it's not about magic. A wedding date can play a big part in couples' futures and is determined by using an ancient equation of adding up all digits in a number and repeating until you get a single digit.

"The numbers are broken down from 1 to 9 and each number has its own energy," Joyce said.

There is something special about Saturday, but it's not the unique combination of sevens, Joyce said. If you add the digits in 7-7-2007, you get 23, and if you add two and three, you get five.

"The number five represents travel, it represents children grandchildren, sports. ... It's also a very romantic number. Five is romance," Joyce said.

Joyce said don't hang your veil on that. It's also a date that will bring a lot of change and challenges, reported WCAU-TV in Philadelphia.

"Yes, you're feeling romantic and feeling in love, but you want to grow with that person," she said. "You feel enough about that person that you can accept any changes that come your way. And, when you have that attitude, it's a winner."

New Baby On Lucky Day

Could the luck of a number convince you to go under the knife?

Shasta and Brian Wragge, of Omaha, Neb., pulled some strings to deliver their son on Saturday.

"We have a great doctor," Shasta Wragge said. "She had to make some calls for us, use connections to get that done."

Shasta Wragge delivered the couple's first child by Caesarean section, so when they went to schedule the second procedure, they picked a special date, reported KETV in Omaha.

"With such a lucky day, we'd love for it to happen that day. Not too many birthdays fall on that day," Shasta Wragge said. "With the realization of all the weddings happening on 7-7-07, I realized, 'Hey, our due date is July 7.'"

Saturdays are a tough day to schedule a birth, but doctors said that hasn't stopped parents from trying.

"I know for a fact, all induction slots and all C-section slots for Saturday at Methodist Hospital are filled," said Dr. Kristen Hoffman of Methodist Physicians Clinic in Omaha.

The Wragges said family members have been offering suggestions as tie-ins to their date.

"We had quite a few people tell us, Seven -- we should name him Seven," said Brian Wragge.

"Maybe with it being such a lucky day, it'll bring him good luck to his life journey ahead," the expectant mother said.

Lucky Birthday

Herman Buechel, of Fond du Lac, Wis., always considered himself lucky.

Buechel has a good wife, a good family -- and, as it happens, a good birthday. On 7-7-07, Buechel will turn 70, reported WISN-TV in Milwaukee.

"I'm very proud of it," Buechel said. "But I didn't have anything to do with it!"

The woman who did, of course, was his mother, whom Buechel said would remind him that he was one of seven babies born at Fond du Lac's St. Agnes Hospital on 7-7-37.

That didn't always mean big celebrations when his lucky birthday rolled around.

"During the war, we didn't have a lot of birthday parties," he said.

As for his party Saturday, Buechel will spend it with the people he loves -- his wife, children and grandchildren. And he couldn't help but splurge on some lottery tickets -- just in case.

Not Lucky For All

Experts are quick to point out that Saturday will be no more or less likely to be lucky than any other day.

And not everyone has positive thoughts about July 7. It's the second anniversary of the London terrorist bombings that killed 52 people.
