Benoit's Doctor's Office Raided
Authorities have raided the office of a Georgia doctor who was the personal physician for Benoit. They said that the federal drug agents and sheriff's officials were looking for records and other items. Hours before the raid began Wednesday night, Dr. Phil Astin had told The Associated Press that he had treated Benoit for low testosterone levels. He said it was likely a result of previous steroid use.But he wouldn't say what medications, if any, he had prescribed when Benoit visited his office on Friday.Atlanta station WSB-TV has obtained a photo that was snapped by a wrestling fan at Astin's office just hours before his death. The fan who took the picture described Benoit as soft-spoken and "nice." He signed an autograph for the woman. Anabolic steroids were found in Benoit's Georgia home -- and that led officials to wonder if the drugs played a role in the slayings. Some experts believe steroids cause paranoia, depression and violent outbursts known as "roid rage." No arrests have been made in connection with Thursday's raid, and a spokesman for the Drug Enforcement Administration in Atlanta wasn't able to say what was seized.McMahon Cautions Against Steroid Theory
The head of WWE said he's worried about a "rush to judgment" on whether steroids played a role in the Benoit deaths.Vince McMahon told NBC's "Today" show that a number of other prescription drugs were found in Benoit's home in addition to steroids.McMahon said that it's all speculation until toxicology tests are in -- which could take weeks. And, he added, "other pressures" could have been a factor.McMahon said what happened is a "horrific tragedy" but he said that "there was no way of telling this man was monster."Attorney: Benoit, Wife Fought Over Son
A lawyer for the WWE said that Benoit argued with his wife over the care of their mentally retarded son in the days before the three were found dead in their Georgia home.Attorney Jerry McDevitt said that the issue of caring for the 7-year-old child was a source of "stress and consternation" in the couple's relationship, though it wasn't the only problem in the marriage. The child suffered from a rare medical condition called Fragile X Syndrome, an inherited form of mental retardation often accompanied by autism.Nancy Benoit filed for divorce in 2003 but later dropped the complaint.A doctor and longtime friend of Benoit said he's surprised and shocked at what happened. He said that the wrestler "worshipped his child" and showed no signs of distress or rage in the days before the killings.
