Sugar Land teen places 4th at Regeneron Science Talent Search 2017

WASHINGTON, D.C. – A 17-year-old Sugar Land resident won $100,000 after placing fourth in the 2017 Regeneron Science Talent Search, the nation's oldest and most prestigious science and math competition for high school seniors.

Byron Xu examined marine seismic data and the reflections of sound waves, with a goal of calculating ocean water temperatures in more detail than current techniques allow. Xu is also an accomplished violinist who performs with the All-Region orchestras.

“Congratulations to Byron on being named a top winner in the Regeneron Science Talent Search 2017,” said Maya Ajmera, president and CEO of Society for Science and the Public and publisher of Science News. “As climate science continues to grow in importance, research like Byron’s will be vital to advancing our understanding of this global challenge."
