33 More HISD Schools Fail Federal Standards

POSTED: Wednesday, August 16, 2006
UPDATED: 5:05 pm CDT August 17, 2006

Twenty-two middle schools and 11 elementary schools join the list of Houston Independent School District campuses that did not make the grade under the standards set in the federal No Child Left Behind education law, KPRC Local 2 reported Thursday.

Eighteen high schools also did not meet the federal standards of the Adequate Yearly Progress plan, known as AYP.

It opens the door to allow students to transfer out of the schools that did meet AYP.

HISD has to offer transfers, transportation and/or supplemental educational services to students wanting out of low-performing schools.

But it may not be easy to transfer. Some schools are at capacity.

Parents will be notified in writing by Aug. 25 about the opportunity to transfer students or to receive supplementary educational services, the district said. The deadline for parents to seek transfers or supplemental services for their children will be Sept. 25. The supplemental services for students will start on Oct. 9.

Officials said 223 HISD schools made Adequate Yearly Progress, while 52 did not. Twenty-six others were not rated.

"We are very pleased that 80 percent of the HISD schools rated met the federal standard, but disappointed that as a district we fell one indicator short," HISD Superintendent Abelardo Saavedra said. "We have a lot to be proud of in our school district, but clearly we have a lot of hard work ahead of us to give children the best education they can get."
