A high school principal died Monday after a fall, KPRC Local 2 reported.

David Holmquist, the coordinating principal of Alief Hastings High School, had undergone surgery on both knees after falling during graduation rehearsal on May 25 and was recovering at home. Authorities said that on Monday morning, Holmquist passed out, fell and never regained consciousness.

Holmquist worked for the Alief Independent School District for 29 years, beginning his career in 1977 as a football coach and teacher at Elsik High School. He moved to Hastings in 1982.

"Words cannot adequately express our sorrow. He was loved and respected by students, staff members and parents," Alief officials said in a statement.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
