HOUSTON -- Students attending a northeast Houston school met former first lady Barbara Bush on Thursday.
Bush spread good cheer to students at
Fleming Middle School, where more than 170 students who survived Hurricane Katrina now attend classes.
During the visit, Bush watched teachers and students use the
Curriculum On Wheels, known as The Cow, which was donated to the school via funds from the
Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund.
Bush said she specifically wanted some of the money to benefit schools that opened their doors to students who survived and were displaced by the hurricane.
"Several schools that had Katrina children that were overloaded," Bush told KPRC Local 2.
Several other schools in the Houston area also received the educational tool, which enhances social studies and science lessons through multimedia content for students in sixth through eighth grades.
"You really pay attention to it and it's better than just hearing the teacher talk," evacuee student Bryson Smith said.
Neil Bush, the former first lady's son, founded the software company that made the technology available.
Other Houston area schools that received The Cow include schools in the Alvin, Katy, Pearland and Spring school districts, along with KIPP New Orleans West and other schools in the Houston school district.
