HISD To Hold Parent Fair At Westbury High

District Hopes Meetings, Focus Groups Help Parents Get Involved

POSTED: Friday, March 3, 2006
UPDATED: 10:24 am CST March 3, 2006

Parents are being invited inside a troubled southwest Houston high school in an effort to help school and community leaders find ways to get parents more involved in the school.

The Houston Independent School District's Character Education Department will hold a parent fair in conjunction with faculty and staff at Westbury High School, 11911 Chimney Rock Road, on Saturday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The district also wants parents to participate in three focus groups, which will feature officials from the City of Houston Health Department, HISD's psychological services department, the Work Source, METRO, Crime Stoppers and the Houston, HISD and METRO police departments.

District officials said they hope the fair helps educate parents about how to become more involved in their children's education.

Approximately 500 participants, including the teachers and staff of the elementary and middle schools that feed students into Westbury, are expected to attend.

The initiative is a result of the Dec. 7 on-campus fight between local students and evacuees from Louisiana due to Hurricane Katrina, and allegations that a man sexually assaulted a 15-year-old girl inside a school restroom on Feb. 2.
