HOUSTON -- A Houston high school student was suspended for not wearing the right clothes, KPRC Local 2, Your Education Station, reported Tuesday.
Michelle Globe wore khaki pants and a white polo to Lamar High School, but she was sent home by a school administrator.
The administrator said the pants Michelle wore were not the uniform khaki slacks required by the school's uniform policy, which are a denim material.
"I just don't understand why these had anything wrong with them," said Globe.
Her father has a hard time understanding, as well. His daughter, described as a good student, wore the same pants last year and had no problems.
"It's a minor one. It doesn't seem like it's something that she should go home and miss out on classes and tests she had today," said Mike Globe.
Lamar's uniform policy states, "All students must wear a blue or white Lamar polo shirt and only khaki uniform pants and skirts. Decorative stitching and outside patch pockets are not allowed. Uniforms must not be excessively tight, loose or baggy and must be worn at the natural waist."
However, on campus, Local 2 saw numerous students who were not wearing the proper uniform, but they did not seem too concerned about not following the rules.
"I'm not too concerned since I'm not here all day," said a Lamar High School senior.
"I think they have to worry more about the education than the dress code. If it just says Lamar, we should be fine," said Miles Richardson a Lamar High School Senior.
And some parents said they don't mind the dress code. They said it makes getting dressed in the morning easier for their kids.
"It diffuses a lot of other issues of different type of clothing," said Lamar parent Craig Minor.
Globe said she's learned her lesson, but still believes, "We don't go to school to be taught how to dress in a ridiculous, conservative way. We go there to learn and get careers, so we can start our lives."
Lamar High School's uniform policy has been in place for the last three years. The principal said the students are made aware of the dress code every day and at the beginning of the school year.
HISD officials said they are precluded by law from discussing specific disciplinary actions.
