HOUSTON -- Local universities reviewed their campus security procedures after six people were killed on the campus of Northern Illinois University, KPRC Local 2 reported Friday.
"There are crazy people out there. Things happen," Houston Community College student Terrell Collins said.
Houston Community College student Ebony White said the incident scared her, but she feels safe at HCC because of the security measures in place.
"People running on campus shooting people, it's crazy," she said. "They do have police officers that patrol the streets around our campus."
HCC police officer Lt. John Dziezdic said the streets are safe.
"We utilize bike patrols and video surveillance cameras," Dziezdic said.
In addition to cameras on campus, local universities like University of Houston, Houston Baptist University, University of St. Thomas, and Rice University have implemented emergency notification systems to alert students and staff.
Those methods include phone calls to a home, office, or mobile phone, text messages, e-mails, and updates on school Web sites.
Houston Community College has an ALERRT (Advance Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training) system in place.
"Everyone on campus must remain in place, lock the doors, and we secure perimeter of building," Dziezdic said. "They're just as safe as we can make them safe."
