New President Takes Over At TSU

POSTED: Monday, February 11, 2008
UPDATED: 6:46 pm CST February 11, 2008

It was the first day of school for the new head of Texas Southern University, KPRC Local 2, Your Education Station, reported Monday.

Dr. John Rudley officially took office as the university's 11th president and vowed to take TSU to "higher heights."

He has 22 years of higher education experience and served as the university's vice president of fiscal affairs in 1984.

Rudley said he plans to revamp TSU's image by improving its financial status.

He visited with business students Monday morning to help teach an economics class.

Rudley said his vision is to make TSU one of the best public universities in the United States.

The school was without a permanent president for more than a year.

The position opened up when the university fired Priscilla Slade after she was accused of misspending taxpayer money. Investigators claimed she used the university's funds to pay for her personal home, landscaping and furnishings.

Slade is awaiting retrial. Her trial on charges of misusing public money ended in a mistrial last year.
