Music Fills Memorial For 'Professor'

By Lyndsay Levingston

POSTED: Friday, February 8, 2008

Music filled the room at the "home-going celebration" for Conrad O. Johnson, KPRC Local 2 reported Friday.

It wasn't a typical memorial service. It was a jam session for the legendary musician.

Hundreds gathered in the Kingdom Builder's Center sanctuary to celebrate Johnson's life.

He died on Feb. 3, just two days after a tribute concert at Kashmere High School presented in his honor.

"I was Prof's first Kashmere band, and he was a blessing to my life," former student Randolph West said.

His students called Johnson "Prof," short for Professor. He was the director of the Kashmere Stage Bend and one of Houston's greatest Jazz educators.

"Not only did he have an impact on my life, he impacted the lives of thousands," West said.

Johnson leaves behind a legacy as a teacher, family man and author. But, most importantly he leaves behind an inspiration to his family and friends to continue his work.

"He told me of his dream to carry on his love for music, as well as the training of young people," U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee said. "He was the kind of person that took his talent, his love of art and music, and infused it into generations of young people."

"As a professional musician, he was always kind and generous about giving younger players an opportunity to get experience," musician Kit Reid said.

Johnson was 92 years old.
