Students at Elsik Ninth Grade Center have discovered a new world through technology and a computer class that inspires them for the real world, KPRC Local 2, Your Education Station, reported Thursday.

"If you hear people saying technology, it's like boring. We work on projects that come out really cool," ninth-grade student Dulce Macedo said.

In the Technology Applications class, students learn how to use multimedia programs, desktop publications, video editing and photography software.

"When they leave my classroom, they feel that they have something they can apply to the real world," technology applications teacher Robert Goetsch said.

In the real world of competition, the class recently created a music video and entered a national contest online.

"Being that I want to pursue a future in acting, it shows me not to be afraid in front of a camera and how to act," ninth-grade student Terrell Barnes said.

They did it by brainstorming, writing a script and rap lyrics, and choreographing the music. They created their masterpiece using music-making software.

"Being able to put together beats, speaking or flowing on your own beat -- it's kind of cool," Barnes said.

The class' entry is now ranked within the top five in its category nationally.

The public is choosing a winner, which receives $15,000 worth of new technology.
