Prairie View Students Fight For Elementary School

By Elizabeth Scarborough

POSTED: Wednesday, October 3, 2007

The fight over Waller Independent School District bond funding continued at Jones Elementary School Tuesday night, Local 2 reported.

Judge DeWayne Charleston led the rally of about 150, mostly Prairie View A&M students, to fight for the elementary school.

"We don't want your rotten apples," Charleston said.

"This is a struggle for justice," one student said.

The school was built in the 1950s. Today, the student body is about 55 percent black and 24 percent Hispanic.

In May, voters approved a $49 million bond to spruce up the school district and build new facilities.

But critics said they believe Jones is getting shortchanged. They said the school needs a major overhaul, but is getting just over $200,000 for renovations while the rest of the predominantly white district is getting millions.

The district points out that the school building is leased, and putting a lot of money into it when the lease is up in three years does not make sense.

Paulette Barnett, a mother of two Jones students, said her kids deserve better.

"That's still unfair," she said. "The kids are still going to school here for now."

James Turnage, a former Jones student and current Prairie View A&M freshman, said he thinks the fight is not about race as much as it is about equality.

"I think it is unfair," he said. "I know what it's like to be in these buildings. They're old and need improvements."

The people who gathered said this rally was just the beginning of their fight.

None of the bond funds has been appropriated yet because Charleston filed a lawsuit against the district and the district counter sued. A judge ruled in favor of the district on Monday, and on Tuesday told Charleston if he wants to appeal, he'll have to pay $715,000 to the district for money they said they would lose because of delayed construction projects.
