HISD Prepares For Temporary School Move

POSTED: Tuesday, September 25, 2007
UPDATED: 12:39 pm CDT September 25, 2007

The Houston Independent School District has made plans for how they will combine two middle schools while one is temporarily closed for environmental testing, KPRC Local 2 reported Tuesday.

Teachers, staff and students at Key Middle School have complained about becoming ill since the school year began. Ambulances have been dispatched to the school several times to transport teachers and staff to area hospitals.

Key's 600 students and 70 staff members will join Fleming Middle School, located at 4910 Collingsworth St., on Wednesday.

Fleming Middle School is two miles away from Key Middle School.

Superintendent Abelardo Saavedra said Fleming was chosen because the building is in good condition and has enough room for the extra students.

The student bodies will attend classes in different parts of the campus and will use different entrances, exits and stairwells.

Life will remain the same for Fleming students. They will continue to report to school at 8 a.m. and breakfast will be offered in the cafeteria.

Key students will first report to Key before being bused to Fleming at 8 a.m. The students will be bused back to Key at 3:30 p.m.

Key students will be served breakfast in their classrooms and will have lunch in the cafeteria between 12:45 and 1:45 p.m.

Sporting activities will also be moved. Key students will use the athletic facilities at Barbara Jordan High School and seventh-grade football games will be played at Kashmere High School.

The district will have extra counselors and administrators at Fleming to ensure a smooth transition.

HISD officials said a meeting would be held on Tuesday at 6 p.m. for parents and students of Key Middle School. The meeting will be held at Fleming.

Officials said the school has been tested several times and nothing abnormal has been found. The district has asked for assistance from the Centers for Disease Control.

The ill have reported having severe headaches, chest pains, breathing problems and vomiting.
