Principals Grade HISD Administrators

POSTED: Friday, July 27, 2007
UPDATED: 5:51 pm CDT July 27, 2007

Even though it's summer, the Houston Independent School District received a report card Friday, KPRC Local 2, Your Education Station, reported. It was for HISD administrative personnel.

Superintendent Abelardo Saavedra described the grades as "pretty good."

"We got Bs, Cs from our principals in most cases," he said.

More than 200 HISD principals evaluated HISD central office workers in an online survey. The principals were asked to rate them from customer service to child studies.

The highest grade they could give was a 5.0.

HISD's highest rating was 4.21 in human resources and the lowest was 3.09 in substitute teacher staffing.

"Almost good is not good enough. We want more As on our report cards," Saavedra said.

The biggest complaint principals made was that nobody returned their phone calls or e-mails fast enough. Saavedra said that there are already new rules in place for next year.

"All departments will be staffed from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. People and not automated operators will answer the phones and the call must be answered by the third ring," Saavedra said.

He also said they will spend $9 million on new school buses. They've hired 20 more HISD police officers and they plan on holding job fairs to hire more substitute teachers.

"We exist strictly to serve our schools and students. We have to improve," Saavedra said.

Saavedra also talked about the highly criticized bonus payment plan. He said it will be improved, and the district will be outsourcing the teacher and principal evaluations. However, he did say the bonuses would increase.
