WorkSource Gives Houston 'C' In Education

Some traits are key to success in many jobs. But the WorkSource - Gulf Coast Workforce Board is concerned that not enough Houstonians, especially young people, are making the grade to compete in the global market, KPRC Local 2, Your Education Station, reported Tuesday.

"What's missing is what employees need and want and what we're producing in our schools," said Richard Shaw with the Gulf Coast Workforce Board.

The group issued a report card comparing the Houston area to other major American cities.

Citing concerns about dropouts and funding, the Houston area earned a C in education.

"We characterize the area as mediocre in terms of education funding, and if we look at workforce systems, our biggest investment is education," Shaw said.

Along with advocating for increased funding, the WorkSource also provides grants so that local companies can train their employees for jobs vital to the economy.

"The program is designed around helping people succeed," said Mike Stilley, with S&B Engineers and Construction.

At S&B, new and veteran employees are learning advanced skills such as design and electrical work. Without the training, the industry as a whole could suffer, according to officials.

"Right now, we're looking at extremely heavy work loads in the next five to 17 years and we don't have the workforce today to man those jobs and provide people," Stilley said.
