Teachers Learn About Other Careers

Some local teachers are trying new things this summer in order to help their students find the right career paths, KPRC Local 2, Your Education Station, reported Friday.

CenterPoint and other companies held classes for teachers this week in order for them to take practical experience back to their students.

Pat Holloway, a Klein Independent School District teacher, hitched a ride with a head line mechanic and soared 65 feet in the air.

"Explain to them that because you may or may not have a college education, you can make an excellent living. If this is something you want to do, then you need to pursue it," she said.

More than 100 classroom teachers from eight school districts were placed at job sites across Greater Houston.

Shell, the Greater Houston Partnership and Houston A+ Challenge organized the partnerships.

CenterPoint officials explained the basics of electricity as a utility and the jobs that the industry offers so teachers will be equipped with information for their students next fall.

"They want to know careers. I teach high school, so they want to know how to get into fields and how much college you have to have and the skills you need," said Patricia Willinsky, a Spring Independent School Teacher.

Teachers said it helps them guide students to career paths.

"It's amazing hands-on experience, and I'll bring it back into the classroom and show it's really possible, attainable to work at these companies," said Karen Bapp, a Houston Independent School District teacher.
