Restaurant report card: Inspectors find slime, off-temperature food

Alphorn Bakery, Domino's Pizza earn A+ grades

HOUSTON – The Houston-area spots in this week's restaurant report card are fan favorites among food lovers. But health inspectors said some of the practices those restaurants are using may put your health at risk.

The employee who showed up to open Shiva Indian Restaurant, on Times Boulevard in Rice Village, wanted to dance around the subject of the restaurant's most recent health inspection. He said he hasn't seen that the restaurant has a roach problem and said he couldn't give out any information.

He said he'd ask the owner to call Channel 2, but there still hasn't been any contact.

At the Cyclone Anaya's, in Midtown on Gray Street, an inspector trashed 31 pounds of pork, shrimp, cheese, sour cream and guacamole because it was off temperature for more than four hours.

Employees of the highly acclaimed Reef Seafood restaurant, in the 2600 block of Travis, had to throw out 750 pounds of ice and clean out the ice machine because inspectors found brown slime and black residue in the machine's chute.

Inspectors melted 1,000 pounds of ice at the Dogwood, in the 2400 block of Midtown, because the ice was contaminated by pink slime.

At the Pizza Hut in the 11000 block of Chimney Rock, inspectors condemned a pound of cheese, because it was off temperature.

Even the McDonald's on the Gulf Freeway at South Shaver issues. Inspectors said an employee used a paper towel to clean her nose, then picked up another paper towel from the floor and just wiped her hands with a cloth instead of washing them.
