HOUSTON – Macy's announced Thursday that it is closing its downtown Houston location.
The retail giant announced plans to make a "series of normal-course adjustments to its portfolio."
The company will close five of its Macy's stores in the early spring. The only Texas location that will close is the 791,000-square-foot store at 1110 Main Street.
The store will begin a final clearance sale on Monday. It will run seven to 11 weeks.
Macy's officials said the store's 138 associates may be offered positions at other stores in the city.
The store opened in 1947 as Foley's.
"It's emotionally sort of a hard day because of the role that Foley's, Macy's has played in the history of downtown of our city," said Bob Eury of the Downtown Management District. "I think we all share the vision of the fourth largest city in America. We need shopping downtown. It's not something that's a choice -- we just got to pull it off.
Houston Mayor Annise Parker said she wants to keep retail shopping strong in downtown Houston.
"We want to find a new spot for Macy's downtown, and if not that, we look for strategic opportunities to implant retail and we rebuild downtown," she said.
Macy's will open several new stores in 2013 and 2014, but none of them are in Texas. When all the changes are made, Macy's will operate 798 stores in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Guam.
