If you've got a front-loading washing machine, chances are you've had some funky smells coming from it at some point. Several manufacturers were sued from consumers claiming design defects don't allow the machines to air out and that causes mold to grow inside.
Now you may be able to get some cash if you've noticed the problem.
Thousands of front-loading washing machines are included in the class action suit, including many Kenmore, Maytag and Whirlpool models made between 2001 and 2010. The full list is here.
None of the companies admit to any wrongdoing or design defects, but to avoid further litigation and court costs, they have agreed to settle the case by offering customers either a $50 cash payment, a cash rebate of either 20 percent or 5 percent off the retail purchase price of a new washing machine or dryer, or reimbursement of up to $500 for out-of-pocket expenses for washer repairs or replacements because of a mold or odor problem.
To get any of those, you have to file a claim online by October 11. On Sept. 7, a judge will decide if the settlement is fair. Payments would go out after that time.
