Recently the AARP Houston held a panel discussion at the University of Houston-Downtown campus about retirement. Experts answered common questions and addressed myths about the stressful subject.

"Fifty is a great age to think about retirement. There's still time to save. There's still time to come up with a plan and there's a lot that can be done. You can research a lot of things about retirement," Marie Stien, AARP volunteer, said.

AARP Houston said there are three things you should do if you are 50 and contemplating eventually retiring:

  • If you are not saving yet, start saving. And if you are saving, save a little more.
  • Stay healthy. Medical expenses are going to happen during retirement. The healthier you are, the better off you are.
  • Ask for help. Not only ask people who are experts in Social Security and Medicare and retirement, but ask other people who know who have retired. Those people can be great resources.
  • Here is a link to the AARP retirement calculator. It will you tell you how much money you'll need to retire when -- and how -- you want.
