Escape the heat at free indoor play areas

You want to get the children outdoors, but when you take a step outside, your sweat glands just say no.

Children can still burn off all their energy inside for free. Kid Fun Houston has compiled a list of free indoor play places in the Houston area. There are the shopping mall play areas that we all know about, but there are also some lesser known but just as cool spots.

Jumping on the bed is not only allowed at Gallery Furniture, it's encouraged at both the North Freeway store and the Grand Parkway location, where you'll find a huge mattress set up just for children. You don't even have to buy a couch to let them enjoy the monkeys and parrots at both locations, and there is a huge aquarium at the Grand Parkway store.

Houston area churches have added indoor play places and invited the public to visit during the week when the buildings are less crowded.

The Main Street indoor park inside First Methodist Church downtown is complete with a mini train structure and a slide. Families with children 5 and under are invited Tuesdays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. until noon.

The play area inside Houston's First Baptist Church at 7401 Katy Freeway is free and open to the public during regular facility hours, except Wednesday evenings.

The indoor playground at Christ the King Presbyterian Church off Silber is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Most of the churches rent out their play areas so you can reserve them for birthday parties on the weekends.
