Delta Air Lines is adding cutting-edge new technology to ensure it never loses another bag.
The airline is rolling out a new luggage tracking system that uses radio frequency identification, known as RFID. The high-tech tags will attach to a bag and reroute them if they’re sent in the wrong direction.

According to the air carrier, the new system works much better than the barcode hand scanning that’s been industry standard for over 20 years. Delta tested the new RFID tags in Baltimore and Las Vegas for two months and reported a 99.9 percent success rate.
By the end of the year, Delta aims to use the technology to send push notifications to passengers’ phones with information about their baggage location.
