Apple delays iPhone 5 pre-orders

You may have to wait three or four weeks for that new smartphone

HOUSTON – Some people waiting on their new iPhone 5 will have to wait a little longer. Pre-orders of the phone won't ship for three to four weeks, Apple said.

Pre-order response to the new smartphone has been massive and outstripped analysts' expectations.

The company said it received more than 2 million pre-orders in the first 24 hours, double the number it got for last year's record-setting iPhone 4S release.

Apple's initial promise to ship pre-ordered phones in a week, the same day they become available at Apple Stores and other retailers, was pushed back just an hour after pre-orders opened up at midnight ET on Sept. 14.

Now, it could take up to a month for the phones to ship.

If you want to try your luck at getting one in the store, it will hit the shelves Friday morning.
