Second annual African-American History parade held at Emancipation Park

This year's theme was Solutions in African-American Education

HOUSTON – The second annual African-American History parade was held Saturday in Emancipation Park. This year's theme was Solutions in African-American Education.

"It's a part of the history," spectator Jimmy Wyatt said.

The parade was short and sweet, but packed an impactful punch.

"We have to appreciate the significance of our diversity," parade marshal Doris Ellis Robertson said.

The paraders celebrated from Emancipation Park in the 3rd Ward to Texas Southern University for the second straight year.

"When you think about education particularly in the African-American community, we've always been able to do great things, so this is just a showcase to make sure the community knows we're going to continue to do that," TSU President Austin Lane said.

"We don't need to deal with the crises. We know what they are. We need to deal with solutions," Robertson said.

The solutions can be seen in a growing annual parade of youngsters learning about history and activism, ending with a symposium at the end of the route.

"When we get to so Texas Southern University, we are going to address solutions to the crises," Robertson said.
