Salvation Army's Red Kettle campaign receives first gold coin of the holiday season

HOUSTON – The Salvation Army's Red Kettle campaign is in full swing to raise money for Houston-area communities.

The organization announced Tuesday that it received the first gold coin of this holiday season.

The Salvation Army Greater Houston Area Command said the 1980 South African coin was donated at a red kettle location outside the Sam's Club on S. Rice Avenue in southwest Houston.

The coin was wrapped inside of a one dollar bill with a note that read, "A child is born, Jesus!"

There's no word on how much the coin is worth.
