Students receive over $7.5M in scholarships from Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo

423 college-bound seniors receive scholarships

HOUSTON – More than $7.5 million in scholarships from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo was awarded to 423 college-bound seniors Wednesday, officials said.

The students received the scholarships at the second of five scholarship announcements this spring and summer.

Rodeo officials said the recipients will attend various Texas colleges and universities in the fall using $7,569,000 from seven of the show's scholarship programs, which include Metropolitan, Opportunity, Exhibitor, Hildebrand, School Art, Ag Mech Technical and Military.

"This banquet shows the diversity of our educational programs, both in terms of the recipients and the types of scholarships offered," president and CEO of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Joel Cowley said. "It's a way of truly giving back to our community beyond our economic impact in March. When these outstanding scholars graduate from college, they'll contribute to the future of our city, state and country."

Nearly 43 percent of the 423 scholars will be the first in their families to attend college. Officials said more than 25 percent of the recipients are the first in their families to graduate high school.

Scholarships are awarded to students who meet the various programs' requirements, as well as demonstrate academic potential, leadership and financial need, officials said. All recipients must attend a Texas college or university.
