HOUSTON – Houstonians opened their hearts and wallets to help members of the military and their families in Operation USO Houston.

KPRC hosted a phone bank from 6 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Monday. More than $39,100 was raised during the phone bank. Donations can always be made online.
The money will go to USO Houston and its mission to support our troops and their families.
Every donor received a complimentary one-year subscription to the quarterly magazine "On Patrol" and a USO car magnet. Everyone who donated $50 or more will receive a USO T-shirt. Those who donated $100 or more will get a full-sized American flag.
Nearly 90 percent of each donation goes directly to items that help our troops.
The USO was founded in 1941 under the directive of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt to handle the on-leave recreation needs of the members of the Armed Forces.
The USO is a nonprofit charitable corporation and is not part of the U.S. government. It relies on contributions from individuals and corporations to support USO activities. It is supported by the president of the United States and the Department of Defense.
Currently, the USO operates more than 160 centers around the world.
The USO is proud to reunite families through Skype video calls, free telephone and Internet connections. USO services include free Internet and email access, libraries and reading rooms, housing assistance, family crisis counseling, support groups, game rooms and nursery facilities.
Houston has USO airport centers at Bush Intercontinental Airport and Hobby Airport. More than 34,000 visit the two local centers annually. They are manned by volunteers.
The USO mission is to provide morale, welfare and recreation-type services to men and women in uniform. The original intent of Congress, and enduring style of USO delivery, is to represent the American people by extending a touch of home to the military.
