Houston Newsmakers July 6: Immigration crisis hits Texas

HOUSTON – The immigration crisis along the Texas border is attracting national attention as women and children streaming in from Central America create log jams along the border, resulting in what's described by many as a humanitarian crisis.

Dr. Geoffrey Hoffman, Professor at the University of Houston Law Center is a guest on Houston Newsmakers with Khambrel Marshall to talk about how we've come to this point. Dr. Hoffman is the Director of the Immigration Clinic at UH.

"We still have to remember, we have a broken immigration system," he said. "I think everybody agrees on that." How is it broken? It's broken because once they get here we have a completely overwhelmed system."

Also this week, Dr. Peter Linzer, from the University of Houston Law Center who specializes in Constitutional law. He says it's unclear what impact the recent Supreme Court decisions will have but because of age, there are several big changes ahead on the Court.

"In the next eight, years three of them are going to leave," Linzer said. "The next president could stack the court for the next 30-years. The next presidential election is critical for the Supreme Court."

Also this week John Nau, the President and CEO of Silver Eagle Distributors, who donated 16 million dollars of his own money toward the Center for Texas Cultural Heritage.

"There's a tremendous amount of technology involved in today's museum," Nau said. "We're not going to be a facility full of artifacts. This is going to be story-telling."

It is an ambitious project designed to showcase southeast Texas for four million visitors a year.

It is a very informative half hour. Watch Houston Newsmakers with Khambrel Marshall Sunday at 10 a.m., right after Meet the Press with David Gregory.
