Hispanic Heritage Month: Dr. Carlos A. Moreno

HOUSTON – Dr. Carlos A. Moreno is the C. Frank Webber Chair in Family Medicine and Professor and Chairman of the Department of Family and Community Medicine at UTHealth, The University of Texas-Houston McGovern Medical School, a position he has held since 1996.

Dr. Moreno attended the University of Texas at Austin. He earned his M.D. from Harvard Medical School and completed a residency program in Family Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio. In 1985, he completed a Robert Wood Johnson Family Practice Academic Development Fellowship at the University of Missouri-Columbia where he earned a Master of Sciences in Public Health.

Before coming to UTHealth, Dr. Moreno was a faculty member for 14 years at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio. From 2001 to 2005 he was Vice President for Community and Educational Outreach at The University of Texas Health Science Center Houston.

Dr. Moreno has served on multiple national, state and local committees and as a consultant for the federal government. He served on the NIH, National Library of Medicine’s Literature Selection and Technical Review Committee;  the HHS, HRSA , Advisory Committee on Training in Primary Care Medicine and Dentistry; the Centers for Disease Control, National Center for Health Statistics, National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics and as a reviewer for HRSA, Family Medicine Training Grants.

Dr. Moreno serves as Chief of the Family Medicine Services at Memorial Hermann Hospital in the Texas Medical Center and is on the Executive Committee of the Harris Health System’s Community Health Program. He is a Board Certified Family Physician and is actively involved in the teaching of medical students and family medicine residents as well as maintaining an active clinical practice.
