Harris County school wins big with Big Lots

Holmquist Elementary School awarded nearly $3,500 to help kick off school year

HOUSTON – Officials say 185 schools from across the country competed for a share of $120,000 in cash prizes in the sixth annual Lots2Give video contest by Big Lots.

Participating schools submitted a video and a brief essay explaining why their school is in need of financial support.

Holmquist Elementary School in Alief was awarded nearly $3,500 to help kick off the school year.

"Yes, we were very surprised," said Nancy Lewin, principal of Holmquist.

Lewin said the money will help provide technology to the campus, as well as some shade trees.

The $20,000 grand prize went to Fairfax Elementary School in Cleveland Heights, Ohio.
