Sukanya Roy, 14, of South Abington Township, Pa., outspelled 274 other contestants to win the 2011 Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., Thursday.

Roy won by spelling her final word "cymotrichous."

Earlier in the evening, 13 spellers from a group of 275 made the championship rounds of the National Spelling Bee.

The competition kicked off preliminary rounds Wednesday, with spellers from 50 U.S. states, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Department of Defense Schools overseas, as well as spellers from the Bahamas, Canada, China, Ghana, Jamaica, Japan, New Zealand and South Korea.

The semifinals were held Thursday afternoon, reducing the field from 41 to 13.

According to the competition's website, this year's spellers ranged in age from 8 to 15 years old, but 82 percent were between the ages of 12 and 14 years old.

This year's group of competitors was comprised of 50.2 percent boys and 49.8 percent girls, according to the site.

13-year-old Prakash Mishra, of Waxhaw, N.C.
13-year-old Samuel Estep, of Berryville, Va.
13-year-old Nabeel Rahman, of Buffalo, N.Y.
12-year-old Laura Newcombe, of Toronto, Ontario, Canada
11-year-old Sriram Hathwar, of Painted Post, N.Y.
11-year-old Arvind Mahankali, of Forest Hills, N.Y.
10-year-old Dhivya Senthil Murugan, of Denver
