Black History Month: Andre Ware

Andre Ware is a former quarterback for the University of Houston Cougars and in 1989 became the first African-American quarterback to win the Heisman Trophy. During his junior year, Ware threw for 4,699 yards, 44 touchdowns and set 26 NCAA records.  That same year, the Dickinson High School graduate was also awarded the Davey O'Brien Award for the most outstanding college quarterback of the year.

During his professional football career, Ware played for the NFL's Detroit Lions (1990 – 1993) and Los Angeles Raiders (1994), as well as for the Canadian Football League's Ottawa Rough Riders, BC Lions and Toronto Argonauts and the German NFL Europe's Berlin Thunder.

In 2004, Ware was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. In 2012, he was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame.  He has since moved into broadcasting, serving as an on-air analyst for ESPN and ESPN2. He is currently a member of the Houston Texans' radio broadcast team.
