"Every day, there are more than 4,000 men and women of the Houston Fire Department that respond to over 800 calls," Capt. Ruy Lozano said. "In those calls, they have a really close view of people's homes. We go in, we're treating patients, but we also see that some people may not have a Christmas. Or maybe there's been a house fire and they bought Christmas, but it's all gone. This is our opportunity to give back to that community."
Lozano said many Houstonians have turned out Tuesday to give to children who wouldn't otherwise have a Christmas.
"Especially the young ones, they have really been helping us out," Lozano said. "Apparently parents have been good teaching their kids to give."
Lozano said last year's toy drive helped 13,000 families, and firefighters hope to help more this year.
