Woman Offers Free Driving Service For Drinkers

Nebraska Woman Says Brother Died In Crash With Drunken Driver

POSTED: Wednesday, November 26, 2008

A Nebraska woman is hoping to keep people who drink and celebrate over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend from getting behind the wheel while drunk.

Julie Fredrickson said she had an idea three months ago and got several area bar owners to go along with it, KETV-TV in Omaha reported. She and her friends offer to drive people home after they've had too much to drink.

"We've walked into a bar one night and people were applauding because they knew who we were," said Fredrickson.

"She'll take you and your car home," said Kaeleen Dougherty, one of Fredrickson's passengers.

Fredrickson drives the drunken person home in their car and her friend, Cindra Barber, follows along to pick her up afterward. The two women started making the free trips home from bars in Millard and West Omaha three months ago.

"I saw a sign in Millard that said, 'What would you do if you had 30 days to live?' " she said.

Fredrickson said the sign made her think of her brother, Mike, who died in a crash while riding with his drunken best friend.

"I've always felt I wanted to do something to prevent this from happening to other families," Fredrickson said.

That's how 3-D Pickup started. It stands for Don't Drive Drunk.

"I've been doing it every night," she said. "I took one night off in three months."

Bartenders have Fredrickson's number on speed dial. She will do pickups and drop-offs until 2 a.m.

"I will do it as long as I need to," Fredrickson said. "I was meant to do this."

She said she has spent $500 out of her own pocket on gasoline since the service started. She said she needs volunteers to keep up with all the calls and has recruited a few people who have court-ordered community service work to do.
