Forbes Lists Top Autos For Retirees

POSTED: Thursday, April 17, 2008
UPDATED: 11:14 am CDT April 17, 2008

Automakers have begun focusing on auto features that can make driving easier and more comfortable for retirees, in an effort to help mature drivers maintain their independence.

Hyundai and Kia both offer autos that can help drivers with less-than-perfect eyesight. The Hyundai Santa Fe SUV and Kia Sedona minivan both offer large climate and audio controls with stand-out text.

The Acura RDX SUV offers a driver's seat that adjusts to eight different settings, including lumbar support, to help those drivers with limited range of motion in the upper body.

These amenities and many others are becoming more common as the number of 65-and-older drivers increases. According to U.S. Census Bureau statistics for 2006, there are over 30 million 65-and-older licensed drivers.

"About one-fifth of all new vehicle buyers are 65 and older," said Alexander Edwards, automotive division president of the market research firm Strategic Vision. And, this group has buying power.

"You don't want to make vehicles that remind them of their age," says Edwards. "Many drivers who are 65 and older have priorities for styling, performance and other features that don't make them think about their actual age.

There are some things mature drivers should consider when searching for a new auto, beyond those high-tech features. Safety features, such as airbags; cargo space, crash-test ratings, ease of entrance and driver's seat position in relation to vehicle controls are all important aspects, and all considered when Forbes.com compiled this list.

The top scoring auto is the Honda Odyssey, with incredible safety ratings, eight-way power-adjusting seats, power-operated sliding doors and a telescoping steering column. Other top vehicles were rated highly for driver lumbar support, power-adjustable foot pedals and power-folding side mirrors.

Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Insurance Institute of Highway Safety crash-tests were used. Every vehicle on this list earned a "good" rating from the IIHS and five stars from NHTSA crash tests. All vehicles have airbags that are designed to reduce injury, anti-lock breaks and traction and stability controls.

Consumer Reports' Reliability Ratings for Driving Position were used, as well as reliability ratings for front and rear access, when determining the top autos for retirees.

All vehicles on the list have power windows, seats and doors, as well as a few extras that make life a little easier. Mature drivers who are still on the go can appreciate features like extra cargo space, power lift gate, heated seats or power moonroofs.

"It is imperative," said AAA President and CEO Robert L. Darbelnet, "that the specific needs of aging motorists be addressed in order for them to continue to drive safely and remain independent."
